April 2022: Be prepared for the new health and social care levy

When you work with BRS Jobs, rest assured we’ll take care of you, and that’s why we’re one step ahead and prepared for the new Health & Social Care levy which is being introduced from the 6th of April 2022.

Following the increase in National Insurance for both employees and employers, BRS Jobs will now pay the following minimum wage to all PAYE employed umbrella contractors:

Over 23 - £12.15 per hour
Under 23 - £11.75 per hour

Am I getting a pay rise?

No, whilst this may seem like a nicely timed pay rise, we are simply increasing our minimum hourly rates to cover the new levy to ensure our employees are earning the National Minimum Wage criteria.

What do I need to do?

Absolutely nothing! Our team of dedicated and experienced consultants will manage the increase in hourly rates and national insurance, and you’ll be paid as normal.

What is the new levy?

The levy has been introduced to help fund health and social care and allow the NHS to recover after the pandemic and we’ll notice our National Insurance contributions increase from the 6th April 2022.

  • Employer’s NI will increase from 13.8% to 15.05%
  • Employee’s NI will increase from 12% to 13.25%

Where is this money being spent?
This is expected to raise £12 billion per year. Initially this will help ease the pressure on the NHS but a proportion will then be moved to the social care system. On April 6th 2023, the National Insurance rates will return to current levels, but the deductions will instead appear as a new item on payslips, referred to as the ‘Health and Social Care Levy’.

How will this affect me?

The increases are going to affect workers and businesses alike, so you’re not alone! Employees will earn less whilst employers will see additional cost considerations to their budgeted staffing costs. As a result, everyone’s net pay will decrease slightly, and employees will earn less over the year. For higher earners, this could be over £1000 per year.

As a self-employed worker

The 1.25% increase will apply to self-employed workers too. This will be paid through the self-assessment tax return and therefore the self-employed will see a similar net decrease in their annual income.

If you’re employed as a PAYE umbrella contractor and unsure as to whether this affects you, get in touch with our team today and email info@brsjobs.co.uk
